The cold winter

The cold winter

My mom and grandma with their dog, Sunny, warmly covered in Marken. It's February 1956, one of the coldest winters in the Netherlands. My grandfather had just founded the Dutch Birds Disaster Fund to help out the many birds in trouble. Last month I found out that he was featured in the Dutch Polygoon journaal (a well known cinema newsreel company) with a story on this fund and with very funny scenes of birds getting rescued. I also found out that the Bird Disaster Fund still exists in Haarlem, it's a bird's hospital now.

This is a personal project with scenes from my family's photos drawn on vintage art catalogue pages. Although it's an art project with personal connotation, a lot of people can relate to the sweet and oftentimes funny scenes in those long-ago days.
